  • A man revealed on Reddit that he and his wife attended a wedding where the groom smashed a forkful of wedding cake into the bride’s face, causing her to get hurt. The couple got divorced less than a year later
  • “The fork tines end up cutting her upper lip a little and there’s this weird 5 mins where they’re holding a fancy table napkin against her face to stop the bleeding,” he wrote
  • The wedding guest and fellow users on the forum speculated whether or not “the divorce rate is higher when people smash cake in [each other’s] faces”

One wedding guest witnessed a groom smash a forkful of wedding cake into his bride’s face — and shared the disastrous consequences that followed.

A man detailed the incident in a post on Reddit, revealing that the bride and groom got divorced less than a year later, which led many users on the forum to speculate on whether or not there is higher divorce rate when people smash their wedding cake into each other’s faces instead of gently feeding each other a bite.

The Redditor now believes there might be “a bit of truth” to the divorce theory because he saw a horrific cake smashing take place at a wedding reception he attended last summer. About “10 or 11 months” after the accident, the bride and groom got divorced.

The man and his wife attended the wedding of his mom’s childhood best friend’s daughter. Everything “was fine” up until it was time to cut the cake.

“Cake time, groom has a fork full, goes to feed it to his bride but drags his hand upwards to spear the cake on I guess her cheek,” he recalled. “The fork tines end up cutting her upper lip a little and there’s this weird 5 mins where they’re holding a fancy table napkin against her face to stop the bleeding.”

He continued, “I still remember the look my wife gave me, with a shocked ‘wtf was he thinking?!?!’ Both of them looked awkward and uncomfortable in the right after moments.”

The guest warned future couples getting married to not smash wedding cake into their partner’s face unless they told them to.

“Guys, unless your fiancé explicitly tells you to ‘Do it!’ for photos or the memory or whatever… don’t do it!!” he wrote.

In the comments section, fellow Reddit users agreed that it’s wrong to smash wedding cake into someone else’s face without consent. They thought it was especially disrespectful to do so to a bride, considering how long hair and makeup takes, and how expensive wedding dresses can be.

“What makes any man think his wife would enjoy being the butt of his joke at her own wedding?” one Redditor questioned.

“Let’s ruin the bride’s hair, (possibly) professional makeup and the most expensive dress she’ll ever buy, thereby forcing her to miss about an hour of the party she’s paid for! Sounds hilarious,” another joked with dry humor.

One woman revealed in a comment that she and her husband “agreed not to” smash cake in each other’s faces, “but he did it anyway.” She added, “it was a sign of things to come and I should have left him right then and there.”

Another woman seconded that decisions should be made “together” for a lasting marriage. She wrote, “my husband and I discussed the cake in the face thing and no garter thing before the wedding. Almost 19 years later, we make decisions, together.”
